Kids Aikido

aikido for children at bend aiki martial arts

Kids Aikido

The Bend Aiki Martial Arts Kids Aikido Classes are structured around the first principal of Aikido, which is to blend or harmonize with conflict. We emphasize respect for ourselves and others, group cooperation, self awareness and conflict resolution.

At Bend Aiki Martial Arts, your child will learn self defense skills of awareness and avoidance and learn to fall and roll safely.  We do not meet force with force, if we are pushed we do not push back, if we are hit we do not hit back. The children are taught that punching and kicking are not acceptable ways of dealing with conflict. Instead we teach to get off the line of attack to avoid the confrontation and redirect that energy. Our teachings focus on a safe, peaceful means of self defense avoiding getting hurt or hurting others.  Trained teachers use cross lateral exercises that develop eye/hand coordination, balance, body awareness and focus.  Additionally, students are introduced to meditation and breathing exercises and will learn basic Japanese terms related to the art.

Above all, we like to have fun in a safe and controlled environment.

Parents of young aikido students find that training in aikido helps their children become calm, focused and grounded. Through practicing Aikido, children learn that instead of picking fights it is better to prevent and de-escalate aggression in the first place. In addition, regular ukemi (the art of falling) practice provides students with emotional resilience. They gain confidence in being able to fall and not get hurt and bounce back up again.  Aikido students practice techniques with partners and thus learn to be sensitive to their partner’s movements. They learn interpersonal skills like taking turns and to respond to physical and verbal feedback. These skills increase self-confidence and help individuals, children and adults alike, feel more comfortable asserting themselves thus making participants more likely to keep themselves physically and emotionally safe and healthy.

In addition to the kids colored belt system, we have Achievement Stripes for: Teamwork, Focus, Pride, and Respect within each belt level that the child can earn.  Ask the instructor for details on how
you, as a parent, can help your child earn one.
